They say it does not really matter if you catch something fishing. If you prefer a bit more action then just hanging out, I have the fish for you. The might Tarpon comes in around 200 pounds, likes a fight and hangs out close to shore.
When it comes to the perfect warrior fish, the Tarpon is high on the list. Bigger than a middle linebacker, they measure out as much as 280 pounds and eight feet in length. They also like a good fight, so warm up those shoulders and arms.
If I asked you what fish family a 200 plus pound fish with a length of up to eight feet would be in, you would probably come up with some good guesses. None of them would be the herring, but it is true. Yes, the might Tarpon is a herring.
Deoxygenated areas of the ocean are becoming a big problem because fish cannot live in them. Well, the Tarpon does not mind them. It simply surfaces and breathes directly from the air instead of through the water. A buff fish, indeed.
You can take a Tarpon with both flies and spin casting. Heavy duty tackle is the name of the game, but it really doesn't matter. You are only in it for the fun of the chase and most Tarpon will spit the bit sooner or later.
The Tarpon is not a picky eater. Bait fish, crab and squid are common bait, but ask the locals in your area what is exciting the Tarpon. In fact, this is a rule you should follow for just about any area.
Ah, but there is something really special about the Tarpon. The habitat of the Tarpon is along the shoreline. It stays close in, which means it has limited routes to escape in. This results in lots of running and spectacular jumping.
It is hard to imagine a better situation. You have a big, spectacular fish that stays close to shore and loves to put up a fight. Heck, you just need bait, basic tackle and an ability to get down to the shore. Does it get any better than that?
We all dream of epic fights with big, aggressive fish. Most of us cannot afford the cost or time to fly to exotic fishing destinations. This makes the Tarpon one of the great game fish for us regular anglers.
